Big toe pain when going down hill

When I climb up hill or walking level I have no problems. But when I go down hill my big toes hurt and depending how far I go I can feel it for days. Last weekend I went 4 miles down hill with only a 15# pack and four days later I can still feel the tingle. I train with a 45# pack at least 3 days a week going down hill .8 miles. My boots are Lowa’s made for carrying weight and they are a half size larger then my street shoes. Going down hill my toes do not touch my boots. I have tried to tie my boots so I don’t have pressure over the arches but nothing has helped. My age is 60.

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining you it is difficult for me to say what may be causing your pain but I can give general recommendations.

When you are saying your toe hurts, is it more of a tingling, numbness or is it a sharp pain? Do you feel the pain only when standing and walking or do you feel the pain when you are sitting or at night? It sounds like it may be a nerve-related pain versus joint pain. If you have not seen a Podiatrist yet, I recommend having a full assessment to rule out all possible causes of pain. Good luck!
