big toe pain

Duagher is a 10 year old dancer. She is having physiotherapy for a number of foot issues. She continues to have muscle pain on the inside of her big toe when she points, or puts weight on her point. It can get swollen. Any ideas? No one seems to know why this is happening… Does muscle building physio specific tot he inside of the big toe daily…

I should add that she has rested her foot, got orthotics, night splint and done intense physio for the past 4 months. Wondering if it could be a pinched nerve? Something surgical? Not sure if this was caused by high level of sports activity (as were her other foot issues), or caused back in September when a friend jammed her toe while playing a running game.

Thank you for the follow up on your daughter. I really would need to examine your daughter and look at all her past diagnostic tests and current symptoms to better come up with a diagnosis or differentials. I am sorry that I cannot be of more help virtually.

    Hi,
I understand that this is a difficult one. She does specific toe/foot muscle building physio three times each day and has for the last 4 months. She is in orthotics and a night spint. We have done ice, heat and a combination of both (2 minutes hot water, 1 minute cold repeated several times) She has had several xrays looking for a fracture/break but nothing has shown up.

Hello and thank you for your question. Unfortunately without examining your daughter it is difficult for me to say exactly what may be causing her pain.

How much does your daughter focus on recovery of her foot musculature? There are several products which are good for foot recovery/massage including Yamuna Foot Wakers or the MELT Method. Has your daughter had any MRI, Ultrasound or other diagnostic tests?

If she has persistent inflammation in her joint due to injury she may require a steroid injection to alleviate the pain. I know this isn’t too specific of help but again without seeing your daughter I apologize but it is difficult to diagnose.
