Baffling Foot Pain

Back in February I was coming down the stairs and I slipped on the edge and jammed my foot into the floor, very, very hard. I basically punched the floor (toes curled in) with my foot. There was immediate bruising and swelling but I could put weight on it. I had an xray and there were no fractures visible. The urgent care PA had me make an appointment with the orthapaedic about two weeks later.

Two weeks later he didn’t see anything and said to come back in 6 wks if it was still bothering me. At the six week mark I made an appointment and went back. The bruising and swelling was gone but I had a sharp pain on the ball of my foot at the 4th metatarsal joint and the 4th tarsal joint was tender to the touch on the top of my foot. It was re-xrayed and still showed nothing. He ordered an MRI and referred me to a podiatrist.

The MRI did not show anything either. I am wearing an aircast now and the pain has not changed. It is a deep throbbing, sharp, aching pain and it is pretty constant. I started physical therapy and the physical therapist started me with ultrasound therapy. My podiatrist seems baffled as to what the problem is.

Any ideas on what the problem could be? Maybe something I can mention at my next appointment with the podiatrist.

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining you it is difficult for me to say. Ideally I’d want to see your MRI report and X-rays as to provide a more complete picture. I do need more information to give you an accurate response.

    Thank you.
