Avulsion Fracture – non-surgical options?

Hi, I’ve been diagnosed with an avulsion/zone 1 fracture on my 5th metatarsal. The crack has pulled the bone outward at about a 20 degree angle, roughly 4mm. The tip of the bone still appears to be attached. The doctor wants to perform surgery to close the angle. I do not want surgery. What is the worst consequence of not performing surgery, and can you give any likelihood for that consequence.

Hello and thank you for your question. For any fracture that is greater than 2mm apart surgery is highly advised. A fracture cannot heal at 4mm distance which could result in a non-union and possible further dysfunction down the roade with the muscle that attaches to it. If you were my patient I would also advise surgery. I hope this helps!
