Ankle Pain & Foot Swelling

I am experiencing ankle pain and swelling after certain types of physical activity, especially running, sometimes the pain radiates into my knee. It is predominantly on my left side. My ankles become stiff at times and pop with certain movements. The top of my left foot also looks especially swollen. I sometimes notice myself rolling my feet to one side when I run. What is causing this problem and how can I fix it?

Hello and thank you for your question. Without examining you it is difficult for me to say exactly what may be causing your foot pain. Do you have a history of ankle sprain or any trauma to your left foot? Typically residual soft tissue damage can cause reactive swelling.

When we have pain in our feet we subconsciously change the way we walk which can increase the stress on our knees and hips. This may explain your knee pain. If you haven’t seen a Podiatrist I would recommend getting a full examination to make sure there is no chronic injury you are dealing with. In the meantime I would limit your activity – especially running as this seems to aggravate your symptoms the most.

    Good luck!
