Pain in arch of foot

I am having pain in the arch of my foot. It's like my foot is stiff. My heel doesn't hurt just my arch. The pain is worse when I haven't used my foot. When i first get out of bed or if I've been sitting for a long period like at work. When I take that first step it's the worse. In the part of my gait where I'm rolling up on the ball of my foot and the metatarsals spread, that gets me every time. Could this be plantar fascitis? I read some on it but I'm not having pain in my heel. Does that make a difference?

Thank you for the question. The way you are describing your symptoms sounds like a classic presentation of plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is connective tissue that runs from the heel all the way to the toes. Although most people feel pain in the heel, fascial pain can occur throughout the entire band.

When the toes begin to flex, as if you are about to push off your foot, this actually pulls on the plantar fascia. This would expain why you feel the pain as you roll onto the ball of your foot. Plantar fasciitis responds very well to conservative treatment of stretching the calves, icing the arch, minimizing activity and anti-inflammatories.

If your pain persists, I would see a Podiatrist who can further evalute you and see if perhaps your biomechanics are increasing the stress to the plantar fascia.
