Foot.com Advisory Board BiographiesSharon Barlizo, D.P.M., C. Ped, Foot.com Medical AdvisorDr. Sharon Barlizo graduated from Concordia University with Honors in Exercise Science along with a specialization in Athletic Therapy, and is a graduate of Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. She completed her Primary Podiatric Medicine Residency training at New York Methodist Hospital and completed her Podiatric Surgical training at Cabrini Medical Center. Dr Barlizo is currently a part of the faculty at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, involved in teaching Wound Care to the freshman and junior students and is the Director of Wound Care at the Foot Clinics of New York. Dr Barlizo is certified in Pedorthics, Hyperbaric Medicine and Neurosensory Nerve and Muscle Testing and Ossatron. Teresa Alpert, C. Ped., B.O.C.Ms. Alpert is a board-certified pedorthist and has 11 years experience as a B.O.C. orthotist. She has lectured at Johns Hopkins Medical School, University of Maryland Medical School, PFA National Symposiums, Hospice Institute of England, Northwestern University, and Ball State University. Ms. Alpert is CEO of Perfectly You and Alpert’s Pharmacy in Baltimore, Maryland. Allison Blaha, C.Ped, Certified Personal Fitness Trainer.Allison Blaha began her career in the foot care industry after receiving a BA in Athletic Training from Lewis University in 1985. She is a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, as well as a Certified Pedorthist. Allison is the owner of "The Foot Comfort Store" located at 1611-B South Melrose Drive, Vista, CA 92083. At her facility, she does shoe modifications (both external and internal) for a variety of foot and biomechanical complaints. In addition, Allison frequently leads workshops on a variety of topics ranging from simple solutions for diabetic foot conditions, to common foot conditions and shoe fitting techniques. Richard T. Braver, D.P.M.Dr. Braver has been a practicing podiatric physician since 1987. He has been a Clinical Assistant Professor at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. He is the Associate Editor of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine Newsletter, and a regular Medical Contributor to Runner’s World Magazine. He is a consultant to numerous corporations, as well as being the team podiatric physician for Seton Hall, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Montclair State University. Cusumano, D.P.M., AACFAS, graduated from Manhattan College in New York and Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. During this time, he functioned as president for his academic class and was an executive member of the Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical School Association. During his studies he was active in biomechanical research at the Gait Study Center in Philadelphia and contributed to the scientific research performed at the facility. Dr. Cusumano completed 2 years of surgical reconstructive foot and ankle training as chief resident at Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus, NJ. This training included forefoot, rear foot, ankle, leg and soft tissue surgery including diabetic limb salvage, trauma, pathologic foot reconstruction, ankle anthroscopy, endoscopy of the heel, rear foot and ankle fusion procedures and pediatric care. He holds certificates in Holmium Laser and Flash Lamp Pulse Dye Laser Surgery. Currently, Dr. Cusumano is a member in the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons, American Podiatric Medical Association, New Jersey Podiatric Medical Association and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. He is a team physician for the athletic department at Fairleigh Dickinson University and Montclaire University. As a certified prosthetist and orthotist he is responsible for oversight of all clinical direction for one of the largest O&P facilities in Pittsburgh. Paul earned his degrees from Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. He sits on the facility accreditation committee for the American Board for Accreditation for AOPA ( American Orthotics & Prosthetics Assoc.), is an active member of the Chief Executive Board of Pittsburgh, and is exceptionally schooled in dealing with pedorthics. Mr. De La Torre has been a guest seminar leader for all the major health maintenance organizations, hospitals, and a majority of the large physician groups in the Pittsburgh area. Andrew Gold, C.P., C.Ped.Mr. Gold is the founder of Comfort Plus Shoes which was established in 1982. The company currently operates two Kansas City locations. Mr. Gold is presently a member of the NSRA Board of Directors and is also a Board Certified Prosthetist and Pedorthist. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin and his Bachelor of Science degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics from New York University. Mr. Gold is recognized for his diverse background in healthcare, and frequently lectures at National symposiums and seminars. Dennis Janisse, C.Ped.Mr. Janisse is the President and C.E.O. of National Pedorthic Services, Inc. He is the Clinical Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Wisconsin and is also the Pedorthic Consultant for Foot Clinics at the Milwaukee County Medical Complex. Mr. Janisse is past President of the Pedorthic Footwear Association and is currently on the Board of Advisors for Biomechanics Magazine as well as Shoe Fit Magazine. He has been featured as a Guest Lecturer at Northwestern University Medical School and at the Ball State University School of Medicine. Mr. Janisse has numerous publications, including Pedorthic Care of the Diabetic Foot, Indications and Presriptions for Orthoses in Sports and many others. Jerome S. Klein, C.O., C. Ped.Mr. Klein is a certified orthotist and a board-certified pedorthist who has practiced since 1976. He has lectured at New York University and at various PFA symposiums. He has given seminars on topics including Diabetic Foot Disorders, Casting Techniques, and Biomechanics of the Foot and Ankle. Mr. Klein is the Director of Pedorthics at Aetrex Worldwide, Inc., Teaneck, New Jersey. Stuart MittlemanMr. Mittleman is one of America’s most well known and successful fitness educators and endurance athletes. His list of clients includes actor Billy Baldwin, model Elle Macpherson, and Anthony Robbins, the peak performance expert whose seminars and programs are attended by thousands of corporate leaders each year. Mr. Mittleman’s phenomenal career spans three decades and includes world record setting performances in ultra distance running. In 1986 he set a world record for the 1000-Mile Run, covering the distance in 11 days. He currently holds the US record for the 6-day run: 578 miles (96 miles a day). Mr. Mittleman received his Master’s degree in Movement Science (Sports Psychology and Exercise Physiology) from Columbia University in 1985. He has a second Masters degree in sociology from the University of Connecticut (Sociology of Sports). Mr. Mittleman is President and owner of NY Ultrafit, Inc., in New York. Desiree Nelson-Kelly, D.P.M.Dr. Nelson-Kelly graduated from the University of Maryland College Park, MD and the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, NY. During this time, she served as Vice-president of her academic class and as National Membership Chairperson for the Student National Podiatric Medical Association. Dr. Nelson-Kelly completed a rotating podiatric residency at Gouverneur Hospital, NY, NY and a podiatric orthopedic residency at the Veterans Hospital in East Orange, NJ. Dr. Nelson-Kelly is currently a member of the Tri-state National Podiatric Medical Association. She also responds to questions presented to this web site by its numerous visitors. Pedowitz, M.D.Dr. Pedowitz has been practicing orthopedic surgeon since 1977. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, Department of Orthopedic Surgery. He has been Course Chairman of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, Northeast Resident Review Course. Dr. Pedowitz was contributing author in the textbook, Disorders of the Foot, and numerous other publications. Robert S. Schwartz, C. Ped.Mr. Schwartz is a board-certified pedorthist, in clinical practice since 1973. In 1986/87 he was President of PFA, after a five-year tenure on the national board of directors. Since 1983, Mr. Schwartz has been a member of New York University’s Pedorthic faculty. He also teaches at Northwestern University, Ball State University, and the Shoe Service Institute of America. Mr. Schwartz is President and owner of Eneslow “The Foot Comfort Center”, NY, NY, and founder of the Eneslow Pedorthic Institute (EPI). Justin Wernick, D.P.M.Dr. Wernick has been a podiatric physician since 1960. He has received many prestigious awards including Podiatrist of the Year. His numerous publications cover a wide variety of topics including, “Lower Extremity Function and Normal Mechanics” and “Understanding Biomechanics”. He is recognized as a leader and innovator in the podiatric community and has been interviewed by David Brinkley.
