I am only 37... when I wake up after sleeping or stand up fom sitting at my desk, it hurts to walk for the first 20 steps or so.....then my feet start feeling better. Also, if i am shopping for longer than a 1/2 hr I have to sit down becauseI can't bear the pain.

Do your feet feel like they "click" and the pain goes?

It sounds as if you could be suffering from plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a fibrous tissue which runs from the heel to the ball of the foot. The pain is worse with your first step in the morning and after periods of rest. The treatment for this is often stretching exercises, cortisone injections and orthotics or insoles. You can read more about this at our web page and clicking on the information about plantar fasciitis. If you have anyother question please contact us again.

I have that as well. For me, only when I wake up, i think it is normal.

Well, it is not a normal occurence to have pain during your first few steps in the morning, but it could be plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is an overuse syndrome and can often be eliminated by stretching exercises and arch supports (orthotics). Please log in again if you have a specific question.

I think I may have this as well. For the past 6 months my feet have always had a dull aching,
on the entire bottom surface (heel, ball, and everything in between). I had an ill-fitting pair of
tennis shoes for about 6 months before that and I finally got rid of them and am now wearing a
wonderful, supportive pair of Nikes, but the pain persists. And, it's real bad if I am on my feet for any extended period of time, like Michelle. I have to put a pillow under my legs so my feet
don't even touch the mattress at night, because the pressure of the mattress on my feet hurts.
Do you think this also fits the description of "plantar fasciitis"? Dumb question: is this condition related in any way to "plantar warts"? Thanks so much in advance! Linda

No this is not associated with plantar warts. Plantar warts are a virus an appear like calluses, but are very painful and often have black dots within them. You may also not be simply ecperiencing plantar fasciitis. You complained of pain also to the ball of the foot. I recommend that you make an appointment for a thorough evaluation as well as possible x-rays. Please let us know what they see after your appointment.

You do not have to live with this PAIN! Plantar fasciitis is caused from Short Muscles. From the Hip all the way to the toes. I agree with the stretching exercises but not the arch supports (orthotics). If you use the Arch supports it will freeze up the muscles even more. I lived with this since 95' I have tried everything, drugs, natural products, magnets, arch supports, Chiropractic, reg. Massage, ect.. but untill 3 weeks ago NOTHING WORKED! I learned about the 2 sec. Stretch. (at 3 sec. your muscles shorten!)
There is a great web site that has books and video tapes... even the Stretch Rope you will need.
They can help you start your way to Pain Free life. But only if you are ready to be pain free. You must make a commitment to do this EVERYDAY! Other wise it will come back!
If you are like me... When I sit my feet are up off the floor or resting on the legs of the chair. This is very bad. Work on keeping your feet flat on the floor. Your muscles will stay long.
Hope this helps.

Well there is a condition in the feet which is similiar to the carpal tunnel that you experience in the hand. the condition is known as tarsal tunnel syndrome. Basically what happens is there is compression of the nerve in the tunnel area where it runs. This compression can be from bone or fibrosis, most commonly. Often, one may require injections, physical therapy and/or surgery to treat this condition. You could also be suffering from intermittent claudication. This is a conditon which is common in smokers and other individuals with poor circulation. Often, they complain of pain after walking just a few blocks and it is alleviated with rest. I would recommend that you follow up with your doctor.

I have too have experienced pain first thing as I get out of bed. The pain is in the heel of the foot and it is primarily in my right foot. I have given deep thought as to what could have caused it. I started to think as to what could have caused this condition and I came up with the following:
1.On Feb. 13 I lost my balanced after leaning to get a box of valentine goodies from the car. As I recall, it was my right foot that stepped on part of the sidewalk and lower ground and I lost my balance.
2. I've noticed the fat cushion of my heels are reduced. I have noticed certain changes in my body which I am attributing to perimenopause.
3. I was wearing Reebok walking tennis shoes that started to fit big and heavy.
4. I have rested by feet on another chair while sitting and even my 4 year old has climbed on my legs to sit with me. (Unfortunately, I did not realize how bad this could be.)
On Monday, I purchased a pair of Reebok Princess tennis shoes, but I still had continued pain in the morning in my right foot. Yesterday I bought Dr. Scholl's orthodic inserts, but I still experienced pain this morning -- this time on both feet. I am wondering whether I should only use the insert on the right foot.
I was hoping to remedy the situation myself before going to a Doctor (I don't have medical insurance and am unemployed). I've read in this message board about stretch exercises are these just any type of exercises that will stretch out the foot or are there specific instructions? If medical help is recommended, would I go to a podiatrist?

Yes, a podiatrist is the doctor that you would see for this condition. It sounds as if you are suffering from plantar fasciitis. I listed information on this in the previous posts on this subject. Icing and stretching are great keys to treatment of this condition. You mentioned that you have tried over the counter orthotics with little relief. You may need to make an appointment to make sure that you are truly suffering from plantar fasciitis and not another condition. Also, your podiatrist may need to give you an injection which for many can provide immediate and long term relief. If this has been going on for a while and it sounds like at least 2 weeks then it is time for an appointment.
