Dear Connie
An ankle block is an injection that will basically numb the entire foot. The local anesthetic hits all of the nerves running down the foot. I've given ankle blocks before, it can be an unpleasant experience, however, it all depends on factors such as the patient's pain threshold, the doctor's technique, use of cold spray, and use of I.V. sedation given prior to the injection by an anesthesiologist.
It will probably take about 4-8 weeks for the joint to fuse completely, serial x-rays will be taken to evaluate the joint. A joint fusion can be a great alternative depending on the patient and their particular given situation. Professions such as boweling, plummbing or ballet dancing will limit your career because your big toe joint will be fused. Is it the best alternative? For some patients it is...It all depends on you, the level of pain, joint deformity, activity level, bone stock, doctor...etc...
If you have reservations, get a second opinion.

Dear Connie
The imflammatory period is the first 3-4 days following sugery so try not to overexert yourself during that period. Follow your doctor's oders as closely as possible. Your podiatrist will probably presribe something for pain and inflammation, take it as directed. If you have any questions, concerns or problems following surgery don't hesitate to contact your surgeon.
