Full Version: Morton's Neuroma... maybe?

My boyfriend, about 2 weeks ago, had a sharp pain run from the ball of his foot under the 2nd and 3rd toe on his right foot. It shot all the way up his leg. The foot pain has stayed almost unbareable for him for going on 3 weeks now. He has gone to the ER and they called it a type on tendonitis. Then he went to a foot doctor and they told him he damaged the nerves in his foot. Everything they have done for him has not been successful. He has had shots, new shoes, and the recommended in soles. He thinks it could be a stress fracture not showing up, but after doing research for him I think it might be Morton's Neuroma but would that cause pain to continue to shot up his leg and keep him in constant pain as well as cause some loss of feeling in his foot?

Thank you for your time

Dear Casiangelh
If it is a true Morton's neuroma, that usually occurs between the third and fourth metatarsal heads. Patients complain of sharp pain which is aggrevated by heels and tight shoe gear. Treatment can involve a combination of the following: modification of shoe gear, orthotics with an appropriate padding, injection therapy, anti=inflammatory medication and/or physical therapy. If conservative management fails, surgical excision of the neuroma can be performed. If the pain is secondary to a stress fracture, the fracture may not appear until 10-14 days following the trauma. Repeat x-rays may be helpful. The pain may also be a result of poor biomechanics, poor shoe gear, weight gain, or increased activity.
You can also consider getting a second opinion. Try to see if you can get copies of previous x-rays, and tests that was performed in the past.

Good-luck and thank-you for contacting foot.com
