Full Version: Pain in side of foot

I recently began walking on a treadmill as part of a weight-loss program. The problems is that when I walk with any intensity, I get this burning sensation in the bottom/sides of my feet. I feel the pain on the outside edges of both feet, although it is much worse in the right foot. If you look at a foot print in the sand, the side of the foot that always touches the sand is the area that hurts (I hope that makes sense!!!)

It only hurst when I walk on the treadmill. I have tried several different walking shoes and none have helped. Any ideas?

Is your walking pace on the tread mill much faster than your normal?

Their is possibilty that your feet are not ready for your increase in activity. Slow down your pace to the point your feet do not hurt and work up from there.

Look at the way your walk alot of people think that to walk quickly you must lock your knee and they increase the impact on the the body. Soften your knee walk as though your trying to sneak up on somebody.

Does your tread mill absorb shock or is it hard?

Try running shoes.

Hope you feel better some

Thanks so much for the advice! I did slow my pace a bit today and that seemed to help some. I also loosened the shoelaces on my shoes. I had them tied pretty tight to keep them from rubbing on my heel. I have large feet (12) for a woman, so it's hard to find shoes that fit just right. Size 11s just aren't big enough at the toes (my toes "fall asleep" while walking) and size 12s are a touch too big in the heel, O I've always laced my shoe pretty tight. I have NEVER seen a size 11 1/2 athletic shoe and I really can't afford to have any custom made.

I guess I just assumed that since I walk everyday of my life my feet were ready to step up the pace - I guess they need some "conditioning" just like every other part of your body!

Thanks again!

Dear Amanda
You should evaluate you shoe pattern as well. If you are wearing out the outside of your shoes you may need an orthotic to help rebalance your foot and help improve your gait pattern. You can try the Lynco orthotic and make sure that you are wearing proper shoe gear for your activity. You can also have a gait analysis performed by either a podiatrist or pedorthist in order to evaluate any underlying pathology. If over the counter orthotics do not help a custom made device may be necessary.

Good-luck and thank-you for contacting foot.com,
