can you die from toenail fungus which has spread to your feet? A friend of mine age 70, has advanced toenail fungus. Now the bottoms of his feet are cracked bleeding. Layers of his feet are lifting , and the color of his feet has turned a jaundiced yellow. I tried to conivince him to go to his doctor, but he is stubbern and refuses.

Dear Jake
A toe nail that is infected with fungus is considered a portal of infection and can lead to serious problems. Can you die from a toe nail infection? Well, the answer is not black and white. A fungal infection to the toe nail in an immunocomprimised patient can cause that individual to be more suseptible to developing further infection which can affect skin, skin structure and bone. If the resulting skin and/or bone infection is not quickly addressed and treated appropriately, it can be fatal and result in loss of limb and even death. Is it typical for a toe nail fungal infection to be fatal and cause death? The answer is no. Also, what you think may be a toe nail fungal infection may not be due to a fungus at all. Only a biopsy of the nail can determine if there is truly an underlying fungal infection. Thickened, disclored nails can be due to a number of reasons such as psoriasis, trauma, bacterial infection, yeast infection, HIV, or underlying pathology to the nail bed/nail plate.
I would recommend that your friend see a Podiatrist or dermatologist for an evaluation.
