My left foot feels like I've been bitten by a fire ant or stung by a bee, but only on top of the one foot. There is no bug bite, but the area swelled immediately in a strip (muscle I'm sure) running from the toe next to the big toe, all the way to the ankle. I wasn't carrying anything. I haven't been over-doing it al all with excessive amounts of walking either. I had not turned my foot when I felt the sharp pinch/sting. I removed my tennis shoe (New Balance walking shoes; not worn out at all; not laced super-tight across the area that hurt) and my sock, taking care to WATCH for a biting critter. I was on a while tiled floor, so I would've noticed anything falling out of the sock. Nothing. I checked the shoe and sock completely for anything that could have had a point (grass seed, etc.). Nothing. Since the only visible evidence was that swelling, I'm befuddled as to what it could be. Two hours later, it's still swollen and stings if I put on a sock. Forget a shoe since it's over my instep. No temperature difference from one foot to the other. Only color change is that it's a bit lighter than the other foot due probably to the little bit of edema around the strip of swelling. Will ibuprofen or Flexeril (scrip on hand from pain therapist due to occasional late effects from chemo/rads taken from 10/86-87 as a teen. Since this is a pinpoint pain, it's different from the neuropathy usual muscle pain that crops up occasionally. Totally new.

Any ideas as to what I've done and how to help it ?

Thanks heaps for any advice you guys have.

Cordially,

Dear Ohmyachingfoot
Neuropathic pain secondary to peripheral neuropathy is usually bilateral, and has the symptoms such as sharp, shooting, burning type of symptoms... It really could be anything...differentiating between diagnoses is done best with combinig the physical exam along with a good subjective history. I would recommend that you see a Podiatrist or medical doctor for an evaluation.

Good-luck and thank-you for contacting foot.com,
