im fifteen years old, and i've had toe nail fungus on my big toe for a long time. sometimes the nail falls off as it just has recently. i've tried an anti-fungal nail polish before, but it didn't help. has anyone found anything that works well for them?

Dear Janeh
There are a number of things that affect toe nails and cause nails to get discolored, become brittle, thicken and fall off. For example: trauma, yeast infection, bacterial infection, psoriasis, vitamin deficiency, anemia, and systemic illness. My point is that nails can be affected by a number of things and is not limited to fungal infections. I would recommend that you see a Podiatrist or dermatologist with a parent or guardian, who will help determine the exact cause of your nail condition and then apply an appropriate treatment plan.

Hi J, there is a drug (search terbinafine), taken orally that I am currently on for the same symptoms. You are young tho' and although I am older than you I was sent for a liver function test, so that after a course of treatment comparisons could be made as to the function of my liver. The reason being (although I dont know the full reason) this drug can affect the liver. So you doc' may decide against prescribing it.
