A few months ago a thick line appeared across both of my big toes. It is starting to grow out, but very slowly. The nail is thicker and of a yellowish color above the line, but appears normal below it. I've noticed that when I squeeze either of my big toys there is some pain.
Does this sound like something I should get checked out? I was told by a family nurse that it could have occurred from a vitamin deficiency.
Any suggestions or information would be helpful.
Thank you.

Did they nurse actually LOOK at the nail? It could be nail infection.

Dear Lisa,
Thickening and yellowish discoloration of the nail can be secondary to a fungus, yeast infection, psoriasis, or trauma. However, if it was a thick band across the nail , that may be due to a nutritional deficiency or other systemic issues. I would suggest that you see a either a Podiatrist of dermatologist for an evaluation. A biopsy of the nail can also be performed in order to help determine the diagnosis.
Good-luck and thank-you for contacting foot.com,
