My 11 year son has been diagnosed with severs disease. It started 1 year ago during football season. Seemed to get better during basketball, but got worse again in baseball. During baseball season had a walking cast for 2 weeks, after we got that off he finished baseball with no pain. Finished being just a normal kid for the rest of the summer with no pain. We started doing some jogging and sprinting to get ready for football and within a week the pain was back. We have a non-walking cast and crutches. This always seems to get rid of the pain, but how do we keep the pain from coming back again.

Dear Teri,
Unfortunately this condition is associated with his growth plate and the fact that your son is very active in sports. His symptoms should fully resolve once his growth plate closes. The other alternative is to decrease his activity. You may also want to try orthotics. Consult your podiatrist. The treatment that he is receiving is currently the standard of care.
Good-luck and thank-you for contacting foot.com,

Thank you for your reply. We now have the non-walking cast off. He is under going physical therapy because the top of his foot is so stiff and painful that he can't walk without a limp, but no pain on the heel!!!!!We do have custom orthotics ready to break in, and they do have heel lifts built into them. Since my son is only 11, I only hope that he does not have to get a cast on every 2-3 months for the next 4 or 5 years.
Thanks,
Teri
