Hi, I am a 23 year old female with no previous or family history of arthritis. Recently Ive been noticing that when I stand up from sitting down on the floor, usually from a cross legged position, my right knee is very stiff and sore and I cannot straighten it out right away. What might be the problem and is there anything I can do about it? Thanks.

Dear Nancy
Unfortunately, knees are not my specialty. However, I will try to share what I do know. Stiffness of the knee may be due to arthritis or meniscal injury. I would recommend that you have your knee evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon or sports medicine specialist.

I also suffer from sore knees - due to an old sports injury. In
general my physical therapist suggest cold packs when the knees are
sore and swollen (to lessen the swelling), heat packs when the knees
are sore but not swollen (to increase blood flow). The general advice
is to use ice when you've suffered a recent injury, and heat for a
chronic condition.

Dear Bluefin
A previoue history of injury can definately result in arthritis to a joint, despite one's age. I would tend to agree with your therapist with regard to ice and heat therapy.
