Hello. I have just found this forum as I frantically search the internet for information regarding surgery to correct the extremely high arch in my right foot. In the past 2 years I have had a lateral ankle reconstruction to repair the ligaments that were destroyed from recurrent ankle sprains, I've been put in a knee high immobilizer boot, done 7 months of physical therapy, had cortisone injections, tried accupuncture, used a TENS unit, ultrasound, chiropractic adjustments, I've tried everything I could find but I have yet to get relief from the horrible pain in the top of my foot, above the arch and at the ankle crease.

My doctor is now discussing surgical options that include cutting wedges into the bone of my heal and some bones in my midfoot. Then there would be pins or screws put in to hold the bones in place and then a physical therapy regimen following 6 - 8 weeks of no weight bearing.

This sounds terrifying and drastic.

Has anyone heard of a surgery like this? I can't find anything substantive in my internet searching. I will be getting a 2nd opinion before undertaking anything so drastic, but I'd like to be a lot more educated about all of this before making a decision.

I greatly appreciate any information that can be shared.

Thank you.

Dear Siobhan
Pes cavus surgery is definately involved. If you have reservations, get a second opinion or even a third. Make sure that you exhust all conservative treatments. Surgery is invasive and there's no turning back once surgery is performed, so make an informed decision.

Good-luck and thank-you for contacting foot.com

hello, i had bone fusion in my right foot due to degenerating disease. i have 3 long screws in my foot holding my bones together. It was done 3 years ago. it dosen't hurt nearly as bad, smile.gif but the first year after the surgery will be a little painful, because that's how long it takes for you foot to heal. you won't be able to walk for a wile after you have your surgery. and let me tell you after you get the screws in your foot, it's a whole new game. You see when you get the screws in the bones, it keeps your foot from flexing, so it's harder for you to walk up stairs and climb ladders. you won't be able to run or anything like that, and if you're like me, you'll say naa I bet i can still run after the surgery. well it only took me one try to find out, why you can't. If you try to then you will get a sharp pain in the part of the foot that becomes the leg, and you will feel the screws hit your bone! outch!!! even if you step off a step wrong it will happen so be careful your first year, oh yeah, you'll have bad and good days, it won't hurt as bad but it will still hurt.
