In august of 2004 I had hammer toe surgery done on both feet, second and third toes and there was no fusion. I have had a lot of pain since. When I am on my feet alot they still swell get inflamed and I get this stabbing raw pain when my feet get hot of when they get cold. I do work on my feet all day and I am restricted to may forms of exercise, can't run, hard to shop because hard floors are painful on the feet.
I have been to the surgeon who done the surgery several times and he says he is apprehensive about doing surgery again because he doesn't want me to go through all the pain again. He basically does not want to take any responsibility for the failure. Well I am in more pain now than before I had the surgery. He did refer me to another orthopedic surgeon and he told me I may have developed Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome RSDS (the first surgeon did not even diognose this and I told him all the symptoms). He said surgery could be done again but could not guarantee the RSDS would not come back worse than before the surgery. The decision I know is mine but in Nova Scotia you can wait 1 to 2 years for a surgeon to do this? I am at he mercy of our health system too! It is so frustrating! Do you think a second surgery could be successful? What treatment is there for RSDS? I 'd appreciate an answer I have to get some relief!
