Hello Dr. I am here for any advice that you can give. The hubby has type 2 diabetes (diagnosed 1995). Sometimes we get with the program and take care of ourselves and sometimes we don't ...Foot surgery in Nov. Dr. removed 2 inches of nerve that was being squished together when he would walk. Now we are in April and the swelling on the foot has not gone down. He hasn't been back to the foot Dr.(all the foot Dr was doing were ultrasounds to break up tissue...) Primary care suggested a dieretic (SP?) She didn't even look at the foot. Need some serious advice here. Primary care just added another RX to get his suger under control. This is very discouraging because he has lost almost 80 pounds in the last year and all he wants to do now is lay around and sleep because the foot hurts too bad to do anything on it...thanks for any advice you can give... sad.gif What kind of Dr should he be going to for this problem? Primary care said that the foot wasn't being affected by the diabetes...

Dear Toni,
Sounds like your husband has a few things going on. Unfortunately, after surgery some patients may experience post-operative swelling and pain. The swelling and pain may take days, weeks, months or years to resolve. You may want to either go back to your initial podiatrist to discuss the present issues and discuss further options. He needs to be re-evaluated and he also needs to be more compliant with his follow-up appointments.
The other option is to seek another opinion with another Podiatris or maybe even a nerve specialist (neurologist) to discuss the nerve pain and pain management.
However, your husband is also diabetic, these patients may take more time to heal as well. His blood sugar should be well controlled for the healing process to occur. If he's not well controlled then that too needs to be addressed.
Good-luck and thank-you for contacting foot.com,
