Hi my name is Carrie and I have had foot/arch pain in just my left foot for the past month. It has now caused pain along the inside my calf, which I assume is shin splints. Because I have been walking weird, my hip is hurting. The strange thing is that it doesn't really bother me while walking or when I just get up in the am, but aches when at rest. I can barely sleep at night. I have been to the foot dr about five times and have been given the anti-inflammatory drugs as well - which do not help at all. Any suggestions for me. I'm starting to think it is something more serious, but can't find any additional information other than flat foot or plantar fac....

Thanks
carrie

Pain in the arch is often diagnosed as plantar fasciitis but patients usually have the most pain on the first step in the morning, with pain becoming less with movement. But this can vary. It would require a physical exam and possibly x-rays in order to diagnose your condition. But you may want to consider an trying an orthotic in your shoe to help relieve your pain. Orthotics are inserts that go into your shoe to help support and control the foot. If your foot is flat you will want a posted orthotic and if you have a medium to high arch you can use a neutral orthotic. You will find information on Foot.com about orthotics. The orthotic will help reduce the strain in the arch area but in order for the orthotic to work you must put it into the right size shoe. I would recommend going to a comfort shoe store to be properly fitted.
