My husband recently had his leg amputated. I am wondering if he had diabetic neropothy before surgery, how would this effect the pain after the amputation?

If the amputation level is high enough and prosthesis has been made properly, there must not be neiropathy. Yust ''fantom'' pains is common and can stay for long period of time, even all life.

Thank you for contacting Foot.com. Peripheral neuropathy is very common in diabetics and is one of the secondary conditions that increases the chance of amputation. How high up the leg was the amputation? If the amputation was below the knee he may still experience the pins and needles sensation associated with peripheral neuropathy. Also, he may want to have his other limb tested for peripheral neuropathy. I would suggest reading more about diabetes and peripheral neuropathy on Foot.com.
