Hi -
I broke my foot on May 22, 2004. I broke my fifth metatarsal (my X-ray is similar to this one: My Webpage

We were on vacation and I stepped down on an uneven surface and my foot twisted sideways and I fell. That is how I broke it. The doctor at the ER Saturday gave me a walking boot and said to go to see my regular doctor on Tuesday or Wednesday.
I went to a family practice doctor on Tuesday and he told me to keep it in the walking boot, but not to put weight on it for 3 weeks and come back and they will X-ray it again. 3 weeks went by and they x-rayed it at my next appointment and there was no new bone growth so they put it in a cast Thursday June 17th and said 3 more weeks and still use crutches. I went back yesterday for my 3 week check and they took the cast off and x-rayed it again. The doctor told me that the x-ray doesn't look any different, but since we're this far out that I should start walking on it and it will be fine in a week or two and he gave me a flat soled shoe to wear for 1 or 2 weeks and I don't need any more follow-up. I can still feel the dull pain on the top of my foot where the fracture was and it hurts to the touch or when I bump it still. I'm not sure if I believe the doctor, I think I may need to see an orthopedist, but I need a referral from the family practice doctor to be able to do that. Is it true that the x-ray can still look the same after almost 7 weeks, but the fracture has healed? dry.gif

Fractures can take a while to heal and you sound as if you fractured your styloid process of the fifth metatarsal. There should be some healing occuring and there should be signs of callus formation. I am not sure of your age and medical status, but both of these can play a role in the healing process. My recommendation is to make an appointment with a podiatrist to seek a second opinion. Do not feel obligated to only rely on your family doctor's suggestions. If you are still having pain then now is the time to seek treatment.

Thank you for your reply! I think I will make an appointment for a 2nd opinion. It still hurts and I have had the cast off since last Thursday. I would think if it was healed by now, it wouldn't be painful still.
Thanks!
