have just returned from the doc, apparently i have metatarsalgia. she said its prob from wearing too small shoes or heeled shoes. but when i told i always wear soft, flat shoes she seemed surprised.have been reading around and it says its usually 2nd or 3rd toe or around big toe. mine is mainly my little toe and the one next to it. they are really painful, and my foot just below there is really swollen. she advised elevation and a metatarsal pad. have been to the chemists locally and none of them have any. any other suggestions or comment?anyone similar probs?

Metatarsalgia can really affect any area to the ball of the foot. This is simply a generalized term for ball of the foot pain. Have you tried our web site for an orthotic with the metatarsal pad built into it? This would benefit you and can easily be transferred from one pair of shoes to the next. You should simply look under products at our web site or click on the metatarsalgia area. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Wendy,
If your feet can tolerate a metatarsal pad, then that is the best bet - make sure that it is placed behind the toes that are giving you the most trouble. Not sure where you live, but you probably need a pedorthist to position the metatarsal pad correctly.
Juas a thought based on your symptoms: check the bottom of your shoes -- do they have a significant curve when your feet are straight. This can be similar to wearing narrow shoes to your fourth & fifth toes. Also, is most of the wear on the outside of your shoe? You could be supinating while you are walking which can lead to a lot of stress on your small toes. If this is the case, then you may need an orthotic to correct the imbalance.
