Hello, I was just diagnosed as having metatarsus adduction (sp?), I am a 26 year old female. Surgery is required to correct this and I was wondering if anyone had any infomation what I would be going through. rolleyes.gif

The doctor that that diagnosed your and recommended surgery should be able to give an answer.

My foot is in the moderate range. I am suppose to meet with the doctor again to go over it some more. I'm just nervous, as this will be the first surgery I've had since having tonsils removed 20 years ago, plus this will have me on crutches for most of my summer. (Thank goodness I'm a teacher and will be off for the summer!) smile.gif Thank you for the reply!

Do your your feet cause you pain or prevent you from normal activities? What have you tried? Have always had problems? Do you feel that you don't walk normal?

Hope you don't mind all the questions just curious.

from the link you can see some of the common surgical procedures.

Please keep us update on what happens and what you decide.

My foot has always caused me pain, it's just recently I finally decided to do something about it, as it has now led to tendonitis in my foot. I do have an abnormal gait, I always have. As a teacher, I am on my feet all day long, and this does not help. From family history, I am certain that I will have arthritis in this foot as I age as well. Oh, and I also have a "fairly large sized bunion" on that foot, as quoted by the doctor, which would also be removed. I am going to have the surgery done, as I will have the summer to recover.

Heather,
Met Adductus is a cause of bunions as it postions the big toe into the interior wall of your shoe, which bends that toe outward into a bunion shape. However, it doesnt mean you need the bunion removed.
To be truthful, foot reconstruction (which what we are talking about here) is a 6 month to 12 recovery.

Heather, Your doctor wants to help you, but he/she is a surgeon. Surgeons perform surgery. When you are a hammer the world is a nail. What I am saying is, see another doctor. See three. See an Orthopedic MD that specializes in the foot. See a Podiatrist that ISN'T a surgeon (they do exist)
What you are looking for is three doctors, that are un-related, that all say the same thing.

What kind of pain are you in? You don't mention

In my office I see bad surgeries all the time. "but my doctor said I would be able to move my toe after they removed my bunion" is something I have heard. Another one is "my doctor said I would be walking pain free in 6-8 weeks" this is 4 months after her surgery.

Heather. Go see other doctors if you haven't already.

I say this will all respect due to Doctor Sharon Barlizo, the medical director of this site.

Best,
Spencer Weisbond, C. Ped.

The pain this week has been constant and achy, now radiating up my leg, to my knee and higher. I've noticed my ankle and big toe are swollen. This doctor actually encouraged me to get a second opinion, not saying I was there for a second opinion, just describing my symptoms to see their advice. I need to look another doctor up and see their opinion. Actually, I also went to my chiropractor who taped my feet/ankles for me and popped them, told me to see if that helped any, and if that did they could make an orthotic for me. But, the taping did not help at all. Thank you.

Yes, but what hurts? You dont mention what part of your foot, or ankle has pain.

Also, dont go to your chiropractor to get orthotics. It's hard enough to get good ones from people that specialize in the foot. I would also tell you not to let your chrio crack your ankles.

For orthotics go to a Podiatrist, a physical therapist, or a skilled technician that specializes in foot orthotics.

The pain is in the top of my foot mainly, outer ankle, and occasionaly an ache shoots up to the big toe. But the biggest pain is at the top of my foot.
