My big toe nails are getting thick and starting to grow down in the skin on both sides of the nail. Also, the nail is lifting off the nail bed in the middle and sticking up. I get regular pedicures to cut the nails out of the sides, which helps, but I'm concerned about the nail growing upward from the bed.

what should i do- it's difficult to wear closed toe shoes.

Thank you for your help

Well what you need to stop doing is going to get pedicures and allowing them to cut your ingrowning toenails out. The nail salon is a top location for individuals to pick up toenail fungus as well as ingrowing toenails as a result of improper sterilization of instruments and improper cutting of the nails. The fact that your toenails are thick and lifting from the nail bed are classic symptoms of the toenail fungus known as "onychomycosis". This can be treated in mild cases by a topical medication and by an oral medication for more serious infection. You should seek medical attention from your podiatrist as soon as possible.
