My custom othotics from my podiatrist had to be adjusted 6 times and they still are not right!

I have pronation with lower arches so I need to wear an orthotic, however I can't seem to get used to these no matter how gradually I try to get used to them. I usually end up with leg or hip pains after a while. When I stop wearing them I feel fine but my foot problems eventually reappear.

I wonder if my doctor is not adjusting them correctly. (These were the type that were initially fitted by stepping into some kind of molding clay.) Lately I have heard about the computerized techniques for fitting custom orthotics, such as the iStep and wonder if I should go that route or maybe the ready-made orthotics shown on this site.

Are computerized fitting techniqes usually superior to the clay fittings? Are the ready-made kind as good as custom fitted? I 'd really appreciate your advice and comments from people who have had similar complaints. Thanks.

Well, you have asked quite a bit in one email. Custom orthoses are usually better for individuals with severe deformities in which a pre-fab may not be able to provide the needed support. However, if one has an average deformity than a pre-fabricated orthoses may be just what the doctor ordered. I have seen great results with both and have used both for myself.

The technique of taking the impression is still a debate. If your impression is taken correctly then the device will match your foot. It doesn't really mean that plaster vs. foam vs iStep is better. I have seen patients satisfied as well as unhappy with each form. So each person is different. I recommend that you try a pair of our Lynco posted orthoses and see if they provide you with a little more support and less pain to the hip and leg.
