hi -
i have recently developed a painful soreness on the side of the ball of my foot. Specifically, on the side of my foot where the bone seems to come out, slightly lower than the direct side and on the back edge. I can press on the front of this bone area and directly on the side and no pain whatsoever - as soon as i apply pressure a little lower towards the bottom of my foot and to the back edge it hurts a great deal. I have no problem with the very bottom of the ball of my foot or the top. If i press in the very center of the area where the bone sticks out slightly i feel no pain at all. What could this be and what can i do to help get rid of this pain?

Dear Barbie
Your pain may be due to a a bunion deformity or bursitis( an inflammation of the bursa which develops secondary to pressure). I would recommend that you try to avoid narrow shoes and heels. A visit to the prdiatrist may also be in order to confirm the diagnosis and rule out any others. He/she can also discuss other treatment options, depending on the severity of the pain.

Good-luck and thank-you for contacting foot.com,
