Hi,

My son was born with a tiny bump on his right foot in which was a concern over the years. I have tried to find out what his condition was and finally managed to get him into the childrens hospital to see a Podiatrist who mentioned that he has Plantar Fibromatosis. I wanted a second opinion and he referred me to the Orthopedic surgeon who works in the same place. He says he's not sure whether my son has Fibromatosis or Faciitis and cannot tell the difference from the MRI Scan. My son is now 6 years old and he is scheduled for a biopsy next month to determine which one he has.

I have done a lot of research over the internet, looked at a few podiatrists websites and it seems to be that Faciitis is a more common term but when it comes to Fibromatosis, not much information is known or given or even mentioned. Even insoles, products etc - focus more on Faciitis and not Fibromatosis. Now why is a qualified surgeon not even clear from an MRI scan? Are the two conditions very similar or different?

Thanks.

Well it is common for the fibromatosis, which is usually a benign lesion, to be found within the plantar fascia. So it is probably for that reason that they are unable to tell the difference. Does your son have any medical conditions? The fibromatosis can be associated with certain conditions which can be diagnosed after the lesions begin to develop.
