I have heard somewhere that using moisturising creams that contain urea may be harmful to the body when it absorbs this ingredient. Has anyone else heard this or does anyone know where I can find more information about the effects of urea on skin cells? Many more patients these days are wanting healthy alternatives and want to know what they are putting onto and into their bodies, and I don't know the answer to this one.

Urea is a waste product produced by the liver and filtered out by the kidneys. It's a mild acid. Alot of products on the market contains acids to increases skin exfoliation reduce wrinkle.
See a dematologist and ask what they would or would not recomend for the skin.

Dear Concerned
Good question! Urea is an ingredient that is present in a number of prescription creams/lotions with varying concentrations, it is a potent moisturizer and an excellent exfoliating agent. There are only a couple of side effects that come to mind that may result in some patients 1) skin sensitivity or contact dermatitis and 2) not to be applied to sun exposed areas because it may result in a burn, especially on the face. I usually prescribe the product to be applied to the feet only and advise patients to stop using the product as soon as possible if irritation occurs. I will contact the representative to find out more information.
