Does anyone know about surgery for flat feet where a plate is inserted in the top of the foot so the foot doesn't collapse when weight is placed on the foot? My doctor suggested this for my flat foot because I'm having pain when I stand for a while. The pain is in the arch and is due to compresses nerves starting in the inside ankle area. The pain is not unbearable, some days it is worse than others, but rest and foot up helps. I do have some nerve damage as a result, and I am not a diabetic. I just know that it's not going to get better and this surgery might be just what I need. Could some one give me information on this procedure and if anyone has had it, what were the results?
thanks!

Dear Allison
There are actually a number of different surgical procedures for flat feet. The procedure is based on the plane of compensation, meaning, which plane does the foot show the most deformity, sagittal, transverse, frontal or combination. The surgeon is guided by x-rays and/or MRI/CT scan results (the latter two is not always necessary for surgical planning). I would definately try orthotics and or bracing prior to surgery.

Good-luck and thank-you for contacting foot.com,
